Russia – Meeting between Jean-Marc Ayrault and his counterpart Sergey Lavrov (October 13, 2016)

Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, spoke with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on the telephone today. He reaffirmed France's determination to continue its open dialogue with Russia.

The two ministers discussed the situation in Syria. Jean-Marc Ayrault highlighted the need to resolve the current deadlock and therefore to put an end to the bombing of Aleppo in order to allow access for humanitarian assistance and to pave the way for a political solution.

The two ministers also discussed Ukraine, while a meeting is taking place in Minsk at the senior official level in order to review progress toward implementing the Minsk agreements.

European Union / ASEAN – Harlem Désirís participation in the 21st ministerial meeting (Bangkok - October 13-14, 2016)

Harlem Désir, Minister of State for European Affairs, will take part in the 21st EU-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting.

The ministers will work on preparing a strategic partnership between the EU and ASEAN (Association of South East Asian States), in order to boost trade and cross-investment and to promote cooperation on regional and international issues, notably with respect to maritime security and the fight against climate disruption. This ministerial meeting is also aimed at strengthening the political relations between the EU and ASEAN.

During his visit, Harlem Désir will meet with the foreign ministers of Myanmar/Burma, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore and Thailand.

Afghanistan – Attacks (October 11-12, 2016)

France condemns the attacks targeted against the Shiite community on October 11 and 12 which resulted in the death of some 30 people, including several children and women.

We pay tribute to the courage of the Afghan Special Forces which neutralized the assailants and freed the hostages.

France extends its condolences to the victims' families and to the Afghan government. We stand alongside Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism.

Nigeria

France condemns the attack which killed almost 10 people and injured around 15 others on October 12 in Maiduguri. We also express our concern at the violence that took place in the northern part of the country during the Shiite celebration of Ashura.

We extend our condolences to the victims' families and to the Nigerian authorities.

France supports Nigeria and its neighbors in the Lake Chad basin in the fight against terrorism.

Burkina Faso – Attack against an army checkpoint (October 12, 2016)

France condemns the attack carried out during the night of October 11 to 12 against the Burkina Faso army checkpoint in Intagom, near the border with Mali, which killed three soldiers.

We extend our condolences to the victims' families and to the Burkina Faso authorities.

France assures Burkina Faso of its solidarity in the face of terrorism, in a struggle that involves all countries in the region

Burundi – International Criminal Court

France notes with concern the Burundi authorities' intention to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Such a decision, which is unprecedented in the history of the International Criminal Court, would penalize Burundi and its people first of all. The fight against impunity is key to ensuring reconciliation and lasting peace.

France calls on Burundi to refrain from making this intention a reality.

Italy / Culture – Death of Dario Fo (October 13, 2016)

While the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2016 was announced today, we were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dario Fo, himself a recipient of this award in 1997 for his entire body of work.

France adores Dario Fo and his theatrical work that was both engaging and prolific.

Dario Fo, an acclaimed playwright, as well as a talented stage director and actor, chose to stage several of his productions in France.

We extend our condolences to his family, friends, readers and admirers.
