Statement by Jean-Marc Ayrault - Iraq – Announcement of the ministerial meeting on the stabilization of Mosul (Paris - October 20, 2016)

The Iraqi forces have just initiated the military operations to liberate Mosul, with the coalition's support. France is playing its full part in these operations. Given what is at stake, I will co-chair, together with my Iraqi counterpart, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, a ministerial meeting on the stabilization of Mosul on Thursday.

More than 20 countries and organizations have been invited to attend in order to lend the necessary support to the Iraqi government. They all share the same determination to ensure that the operations to liberate Mosul guarantee, in the most effective way possible, that the threat posed by Daesh is eliminated and that they will restore freedom, peace and security to the inhabitants.

This meeting should provide an opportunity to jointly address three priorities:

  • 1/ the protection of the civilian populations currently trapped by Daesh in Mosul and in the neighboring villages and exposed to combat zones;
  • 2/ the provision of aid and humanitarian assistance needed by the inhabitants of the Nineveh Plain against the backdrop of the fighting in Mosul;
  • 3/ the development of a plan by the Iraqi authorities to stabilize the city of Mosul and the surrounding region, and more generally the areas liberated from Daesh. The good governance of the city and its surrounding region will make it possible to respond to the aspirations of the local population in all its diversity, while respecting the unity and sovereignty of Iraq.

El Salvador – Meeting between Jean-Marc Ayrault and his counterpart (October 18, 2016)

The minister of foreign affairs and international development will receive Hugo Martinez, Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, today.

Together, they will discuss the fight against climate change, actions to promote peace and the defense of human rights. Our two countries engage in constructive dialogue within the Human Rights Council, and El Salvador plays an active role in peacekeeping operations.

This meeting will provide an opportunity to take stock of our political dialogue, our economic and trade relations and the relaunching of academic and linguistic cooperation between our two countries.

Hugo Martinez will attend the ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the Maison de l'Amérique Latine on October 18 presided over by the head of state.

European Union – Harlem Désir's participation in the General Affairs Council (Luxembourg - October 18, 2016)

Harlem Désir, Minister of State for European Affairs, will represent France today at the General Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg.

The ministers' discussions will focus on preparations for the European Council from October 20 to 21 and the revision of the EU's multi-annual financial framework for 2014-2020.

Trade / EU – Matthias Fekl's participation in the Foreign Affairs Council (Trade) (Luxembourg - October 18, 2016)

Matthias Fekl, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, the Promotion of Tourism, and French Nationals Abroad, will take part in the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council (Trade) today; the agenda will be devoted to the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada.

France supports this trade agreement between the EU and Canada, which it considers to be mutually beneficial and commensurate with European requirements, like the relations with our Canadian partners.

Philippines - Vietnam / Typhoon Sarika

France expresses its sympathy and solidarity with the families of the victims of Typhoon Sarika. It assures the authorities of Vietnam and the Philippines of its support at this difficult time.

Myanmar/Burma / Ferry disaster

France extends its condolences to the families of the victims of the ferry disaster on the Chindwin River, in the central part of the country, which exacted a particularly high toll. It stands alongside the Burmese authorities at this difficult time.
