Situation in Turkey – Meeting between Jean-Marc Ayrault and the secretary-general of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland (November 15, 2016)

The minister of foreign affairs and international development met on November 15 with Thorbjørn Jagland, secretary-general of the Council of Europe.

They reviewed the situation in Turkey, which Mr. Jagland visited on November 11, particularly measures implemented under the state of emergency and the most important trials initiated since the coup attempt on July 15.

They also talked about current discussions on Turkish counterterrorism legislation and on the need for it to be compatible with the Council of Europe's shared values and practices.

France reiterates its commitment to the dialogue that the Council of Europe maintains with the Turkish authorities to ensure that Turkey meets the commitments to which it has subscribed, particularly under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Renewable energies – Working meeting between Jean-Marc Ayrault and business representatives (Paris - November 16, 2016)

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Jean-Marc Ayrault is hosting 10 SMEs from the renewable energy sector. Renewable Energy Unifier Jean Ballandras will also be present.

This meeting will focus on the international prospects for renewables and will identify ways to better support SMEs in a context of the sector's global growth.

The dynamism of the renewable energies sector was given an additional boost by the Paris Climate Agreement in December 2015, whose implementing provisions are being discussed at COP22 in Marrakech.

Syria – Bombardment of hospitals

France condemns air strikes on medical facilities in areas held by the opposition in northern Syria. Since Monday, three hospitals, in Awijel, Kafr Naha and Atareb, have been targeted by air strikes.

Attacks on humanitarian and healthcare facilities are war crimes.

France calls on the regime and its allies to immediately stop their bombing, which resumed with new intensity in recent hours. This cycle of violence must end.

Syria / United Nations – Adoption of a resolution by the General Assembly on human rights (November 15, 2016)

France welcomes the adoption on November 15, by a large majority, by the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly of a resolution on human rights in Syria. France co-sponsored this text and actively contributed to its adoption.

Through this resolution, the international community expresses its concern at the deteriorating situation in Syria, notably in Aleppo. While the violence on the ground is escalating, the Syrian regime and its allies on the one hand, and Daesh on the other hand, are continuing to commit atrocities.

France reaffirms its determination to combat impunity in Syria, as it did so by submitting the photos in the Caesar case to the courts.

OSCE / Freedom of the press – Visit to France by Dunja Mijatovic, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media (November 15, 2016)

Dunja Mijatovic, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, was received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development on November 15.

This meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of the situation of journalists and the media in the OSCE member countries, notably in conflict-affected countries, as well as in Russia and Turkey.

France appreciates the efforts of Dunja Mijatovic to accomplish her monitoring mission and provide support to journalists and media outlets. Their independence is one of the basic principles of democracy and has a central role to play in the OSCE's missions.

Democratic Republic of Congo – Murder of Marcel Lubala

Marcel Lubala, a journalist from Radio-Télévision Nationale Congolaise, was murdered in his home in Mbuji-Mayi (East Kasai Province) during the night of November 14 to 15.

We extend our condolences to the victim's family and call on the Congolese authorities to shed full light on this murder and to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
