Syria / United Nations – Meeting between Jean-Marc Ayrault and Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy for Syria (December 15, 2016)

Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, is meeting with Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy for Syria, on December 15.

Jean-Marc Ayrault and Staffan de Mistura will discuss the disastrous humanitarian situation in Aleppo as well as the actions that the international community must take in order to ensure the safe evacuation of the civilian populations and deployment of humanitarian assistance.

We reaffirm that there are three urgent priorities in Syria:

  • the implementation of a cessation of hostilities at the national level and immediate, full, safe and unrestricted humanitarian access to all people in need;
  • the resumption of negotiations on a political transition in accordance with the Geneva Communiqué and UNSCR 2254;
  • the relentless pursuit of the fight against terrorism.

Libya – Meeting between Jean-Marc Ayrault and Fayez Serraj (December 14, 2016)

As we approach the first anniversary of the Skhirat agreement on December 17, 2016, Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, met with Fayez Serraj, Libyan Prime Minister and President of the Presidency Council, on December 14.

He reaffirmed France's support for the Government of National Accord and for his efforts to promote reconciliation and security and manage the country's resources for the benefit of all Libyan people.

The minister also reaffirmed our commitment to supporting the Government of National Accord and the Presidency Council in their efforts to ensure the unity of all Libyan forces under their authority. Libya must return to the path of peace and stability in order to defeat terrorism.

The minister reaffirmed his support for the mediation efforts of Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General.

Mexico – Death of Rafael Tovary de Teresa, Minister of Culture (December 10, 2016)

We were extremely saddened to learn of the death of Rafael Tovary de Teresa, Mexico's Minister of Culture, on December 10, 2016.

France pays tribute to the memory of this great scholar, who was a French speaker and Francophile and who played a major role in promoting Mexican culture and ensuring the vitality of our cultural and artistic cooperation.

His influence will continue to be felt through the "Mayas" exhibition at the Musée du Quai Branly, the "Frida Khalo/Diego Rivera: Art in Fusion" exhibition at the Musée de l'Orangerie and the "Mexico 1900-1950" exhibition, currently on show at the Grand Palais.

We extend our condolences to his family and friends as well as to the Mexican authorities.

French nationals abroad – Overseas voting

We want to remind French nationals abroad that they can vote abroad in the 2017 elections. The deadline for voter registration is December 31, 2016. All information on how to register is available on the ministry's website.

An awareness campaign to promote voter registration was launched on the Internet, TV5 Monde, RFI and France 24.

On November 13, 2016, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development's Elections Office responded on our Facebook pages to live questions, on an individual basis, from French nationals abroad regarding registration on the consular electoral rolls and voting procedures. All of these exchanges are available on the ministry's Facebook pages.
