United Nations / Yemen – Appointment of Martin Griffiths as the new special envoy of the UN secretary-general (February 14, 2018)

France welcomes the appointment of Martin Griffiths as the new special envoy of the UN secretary-general for Yemen on February 14.

We wish him every success and express our support for his efforts to carry out his mission. Martin Griffiths, who is executive director of the European Institute of Peace and has worked for several international organizations, including humanitarian organizations, brings all the experience needed to fulfill his mission.

We also thank Mr. Griffith's predecessor, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, for his efforts to find a peaceful solution and improve humanitarian access.

Our priority in Yemen is to respond to the humanitarian crisis and to reach a political solution. The only way to preserve the country's territorial integrity, restore lasting peace and security and put an end to the tragic humanitarian situation is through a political solution. The Yemeni parties must therefore resume, without conditions, the peace negotiations under UN auspices and put an end to the fighting. We actively support the special envoy's efforts in this respect.

Kosovo – 10 years of independence (February 17, 2018)

France extends its congratulations to Kosovo for its national holiday on February 17, which this year marks the 10th anniversary of its independence.

France was among the first nations to recognize Kosovo. It has stood steadily by its side, supporting it in its efforts to assert itself internationally, to consolidate institutions, to build a state governed by the rule of law, and to carry out the economic and social reforms needed to draw closer to Europe.

The EU is paying special attention to the Western Balkans, as illustrated by the strategy published by the European Commission on February 6. It clearly underscores the European focus of the countries of the Western Balkans, as well as the reforms that are necessary to move forward to that end. The challenges facing it are substantial and the process is a demanding one, but Kosovo can count on France's support.

France is also committed to continuing efforts toward a complete normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, which is vital to the region's stability and the European prospects of both countries. To that end, France fully supports the dialogue being conducted under the authority of the EU.
