United Nations – Adoption of resolution 2434 renewing the mandate of UNSMIL (September. 13, 2018)

France welcomes the unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2434 renewing the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for one year.

The Security Council, as it did so when it decided to impose sanctions against Ibrahim Jadhran on September 12, reaffirms through this resolution the international community's determination to keep the political process in Libya moving, as well as its full support for the mediation efforts of Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) Ghassan Salamé.

UNSMIL plays a critical role in supporting this mediation. We welcome the progress that it has made in consolidating its presence in Tripoli, as well as its plans to establish a permanent presence in Benghazi.

This year, UNSMIL notably made it possible for local elections in Zawiya to take place in August - the first elections in Libya in 2018. It plays a key role in preparing for the elections scheduled to take place by the end of the year, in support of the Libyan High National Elections Commission, which organized the voter registration campaign and to which France provides financial support.

France is continuing its efforts to ensure that Libya regains stability as swiftly as possible. Together with its international partners, it remains committed to ensuring that the Action Plan set out by Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) Ghassan Salamé is fully implemented in accordance with the Political Declaration endorsed by the Libyan actors on May 29 in Paris.

Ukraine

The Ukrainian opposition called on foreign countries to condemn the statements made by the chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament, Andriy Parubiy, who praised Adolf Hitler in a live broadcast on a Ukrainian television channel. Where do you stand following these statements?

France utterly condemns any glorification of Nazism.
