160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Japan (October 9, 2018)

France and Japan are today celebrating the 160th anniversary of the signing on October 9, 1858, of the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Trade that made it possible to establish their diplomatic relations.

This anniversary was marked over the course of the year by the visit to Japan by Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs from January 26 to 29, by his Japanese counterpart's visit to France from July 12 to 14 for the launch of the "Japonism 2018" cultural season as well as by the visit to France by Japan's crown prince from September 7 to 14.

Our two countries have been bound together since 2013 by a "special partnership," based on shared values. France and Japan, which will be responsible for chairing the G7 and the G20 respectively in 2019, share the same priorities of strengthening multilateralism, the fight against climate change and the fight against terrorism.

Japan is France's second largest trade partner in Asia and the largest Asian investor in France. In the area of tourism, France is the most popular European destination for Japanese tourists.

Council of Europe / Human rights – Václav Havel Human Rights Prize awarded by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (October 8, 2018)

France welcomes the awarding by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe of the Václav Havel Human Rights to Oyub Titiev. Mr. Titiev, who is the head of the Chechnya branch of Russian human rights center Memorial, has been held in prison in Chechnya since January 2018. Mr. Titiev took over from Natalia Estemirova, who was killed in 2009; he notably investigated cases of extrajudicial executions.

We call on the Russian authorities to guarantee Mr. Titiev a fair trial and to ensure the safety and integrity of human rights defenders, in accordance with their international commitments.
