United Nations – Accession of new members to the Security Council (January 2, 2019)

France congratulates South Africa, Germany, Belgium, Indonesia and the Dominican Republic, which began their two-year terms as members of the Security Council yesterday.

It expresses its willingness to work with each of them and is counting on their commitment to ensure that the Security Council fully assumes its crucial responsibility to maintain international peace and security.

France takes this opportunity to pay tribute to the work carried out by Bolivia, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan and Sweden as members of the Security Council during the 2017-2018 term, as well as by the Netherlands in 2018.

Mali – Situation in the central part of the country (January 2, 2019)

France is concerned at the increase in murders and serious crime perpetrated against civilians in central Mali over the last few months, which reached a new peak yesterday, with dozens of fatalities.

France calls for a strong response on the part of the Malian authorities in order to ensure that these crimes are immediately investigated and that their perpetrators are prosecuted and punished.

This response must be based on an approach that combines legal proceedings, the prevention of further human rights violations and the disarmament of all militias, as pledged by the government.
