Portugal – Visit by Amélie de Montchalin (July 11, 2019)

Amélie de Montchalin, Minister of State, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, is traveling to Lisbon on July 11, nearly a year after President Macron's visit on July 28, 2018.

She will meet with her Portuguese counterpart, Ana Paula Zacarias, and with Bernardo Futscher Pereira, diplomatic advisor to Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa. During these two meetings, she will continue our close coordination with Portugal on European issues, such as the development of a future EU budget that reflects our common priorities, especially agriculture; the expansion of a European defense; and EU relations with China and Africa. On the cultural front, educational and linguistic cooperation between France and Portugal will also be discussed.

A France-Spain-Portugal session that will include Luis Marco Aguiriano, the Spanish secretary of state for the European Union, will help us deepen French-Iberian cooperation on the future of the EU. Our three countries see eye to eye on a large number of issues to a remarkable degree, including the negotiation of the future European budget; deepening the economic and monetary union; and economic, social, and fiscal convergence. At a time when the Western Mediterranean is the leading gateway into Europe, migratory issues will also be discussed, especially from the perspective of reforming the asylum system and reworking Schengen.

During her trip, Amélie de Montchalin will also have a bilateral meeting with her Spanish counterpart on European priorities shared by France and Span, such as unity on Brexit, migration, and social and fiscal convergence, but also on the timetable for French-Spanish meetings in the coming months. Bilateral issues will also be discussed.
