Lithuania – Meetings between Jean-Yves Le Drian and Amélie de Montchalin with Linas Linkevičius, foreign minister of the Republic of Lithuania (February 10, 2020)

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian will meet today with his Lithuanian counterpart, Linas Linkevičius.

The two ministers will discuss expanding bilateral relations and security in Europe, particularly the deployment of a French joint tactical battalion in Lithuania this July as part of a move to enhance the Atlantic Alliance's forward presence. Mr. Le Drian and Mr. Linkevičius will address the current European and international issues on which our countries are working together (Russia, Ukraine, the Sahel, Iran, the Middle East peace plan).

Amélie de Montchalin, minister of state for European affairs, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will also meet with Mr. Linkevičius to discuss European issues (the Conference on the Future of Europe, the multiannual budget, the Council of Europe and enlargement).

Mr. Linkevičius will also meet with Ambassador Pierre Vimont, the President's special representative for the strategic dialogue with Russia.

Iran – Space/ballistic launch (February 9, 2020)

Iran announced that it carried out a space launch on February 9. France condemns this launch, which employs ballistic missile technologies, in particular those used for intercontinental missiles. Iran also unveiled a new ballistic missile, which it said had a range that could exceed 500 kilometers.

In keeping with its obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, Iran cannot engage in activities, including launches, connected to ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The development of the Iranian ballistic missile program undermines regional stability and affects European security. France calls on Iran to fully abide by its international obligations in this regard.

Coronavirus

Can you confirm that some of the passengers quarantined aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship because of the coronavirus epidemic are French?

According to the information we have at this stage, there are three French passengers and one French crew member aboard the ship.

We are monitoring developments in the situation very closely. Our consulate in Tokyo made contact with our compatriots and is in touch with both the Japanese authorities and the cruise company.
