China – Phone conversation between Jean-Yves Le Drian and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi (April 22, 2020)

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke at length with his counterpart, Wang Yi, on April 22, for the fifth time since the start of the crisis, in order to address the international community's global response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the continuation of the air bridge. In this context, the two ministers reaffirmed their determination to ensure that the UN Security Council provides a united response to the challenges of international peace and security.

Iran – Launch of a military satellite by Iran (April 22, 2020)

Iran claims to have launched a military satellite into orbit. France strongly condemns this launch which is not in conformity with UNSCR 2231.

Given that the technology used for space launches is very similar to that used for ballistic missile launches, this launch directly contributes to the extremely troubling progress made by Iran in its ballistic missile program. The role played by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Aerospace Force, an entity subject to EU sanctions, in this launch reflects the close link between these two programs.

Iran's ballistic missile program is of major concern for regional and international security. It contributes to the destabilization of the region and to mounting tensions.

We call on Iran to immediately halt any activity related to the development of ballistic missiles designed to be able to carry nuclear weapons, including space launch vehicles, and to comply with its obligations under all relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Cameroon – Commission of inquiry on Ngarbuh (April 23, 2020)

France takes note of the conclusion of the commission of inquiry established by Cameroonian authorities in the aftermath of the violence that led to the deaths of several residents, including children, in Ngarbuh village, North West region, on February 14. It welcomes the opening of legal proceedings.

The Cameroonian authorities' commitment to fighting impunity is a priority for achieving a lasting settlement in the crisis in the North West and South West regions. France reiterates that it is the duty of the defense and security forces to guarantee the security and protection of civilian populations, including in combat zones.
