Sudan – Jean-Yves Le Drian's participation in the meeting of the Friends of Sudan group (video conference, May 7, 2020)

The seventh meeting of the Friends of Sudan group on took place via video conference on May 7 under the chairmanship of France. The meeting was opened by Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and by Ibrahim Elbadawi, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning of Sudan.

The minister reaffirmed France's resolute support for a successful political transition in Sudan and for Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's transitional government. Minister Elbadawi presented the Sudanese government's plan to ensure the country's economic recovery, which also included the response to the challenge posed by the Covid-19 health crisis. In order to put these reciprocal commitments into practice, this meeting notably resulted in the adoption of a framework for a mutual partnership between the Sudanese government and its international partners.

This meeting also provided an opportunity to prepare for the conference on financial support for Sudan scheduled to take place in Berlin at the end of June, under the co-chairmanship of Germany, the EU, the UN and Sudan.

In order to underscore France's determination to support Sudan at this critical time, the minister had spoken by phone with Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok two days before this meeting. During this call, Jean-Yves Le Drian reaffirmed our support for Sudan's removal from the American list of state sponsors of terrorism, as well as the launch of the debt relief process for Sudan. He also reiterated the commitment made by President Macron in September that France would host, in due course, a high-level international conference in support of Sudan. Lastly, Jean-Yves Le Drian assured his interlocutor of France's efforts to mobilize the international financial institutions in order to ensure that Sudan will benefit from multilateral assistance in response to the Covid-19 crisis.
