Jordan – Visit by Jean-Yves Le Drian (September 23-24, 2020)

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, is visiting Jordan from September 23 to 24.

The minister will have an audience with King Abdullah II of Jordan, will meet with Ayman Safadi, Jordan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, and will take part in a ministerial meeting focusing on the efforts to relaunch the Israeli-Palestinian peace process together with his Jordanian, Egyptian and German colleagues.

Jean-Yves Le Drian will take part, from Amman, in the high-level video conference of the UN Security Council on post-Covid-19 governance in the area of international peace and security.

SOS Chrétiens d'Orient

In Syria, the French NGO SOS Chrétiens d'Orient is, according to Mediapart, supporting pro-Assad Christian militia groups and funding agencies associated with Bashar al-Assad's regime, with which France has broken off diplomatic relations. This association is also a "partner organization in national defense" of the Ministry for the Armed Forces. Was the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs aware of the NGO's activities and if so, did it inform the Ministry for the Armed Forces? Have you been contacted by the American authorities (in this regard) within the framework of the new Caesar Act targeted against the regime's supporters?

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has not provided any logistical or financial support to the association SOS Chrétiens d'Orient. With respect to the issues pertaining to the Ministry for the Armed Forces, please consult this ministry. The U.S. authorities have not as yet contacted the ministry with respect to this association.

Belarus

Will France issue its own national declaration in addition to that of the EU on the potential illegitimacy of President Lukashenko's inauguration in Belarus?

As an EU member state, France fully supports the declaration concerning Mr. Lukashenko issued by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on behalf of the 27 EU member states.

Russia

French newspapers revealed a telephone conversation between President Putin and President Macron. Do you have any comment?

Any leak of confidential internal documents is unacceptable. That is why we refrain from commenting on them. An investigation is under way.

The dialogue that the French President wished to establish with Russia is intended to deal with all issues—and specifically those affecting our security—both candidly and rigorously, and it will carry on in that spirit.

Iran

Have the UK, France and Germany approached Iran about the human rights situation in that country? Did the E3 send a letter to Iran to protest the fate of dual citizens? What are the contents of that letter?

French officials regularly express their concerns over constant serious human rights violations in Iran. The Minister took the opportunity to reiterate our concerns and demands in that regard when he addressed the National Assembly on September 22. Those concerns are shared by many of our partners, including Germany and the UK.
