Telephone conversation between French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton - Communiqué from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, January 22, 2009

Bernard Kouchner spoke by phone this evening with Hillary Clinton, following her Senate confirmation yesterday as United States Secretary of State.

He again expressed his warm congratulations and his wishes for her success in the fulfillment of her mission.

The two ministers underscored their determination to pursue a relationship of trust and to work together closely to meet the principal challenges facing France and the United States, as well as the international community as a whole.

Bernard Kouchner and Hillary Clinton spoke about the situation in Gaza. In particular, they emphasized the urgent need to open crossing points so that humanitarian aid may be distributed without delay to the Palestinian people, and the need to combat weapons smuggling into the Gaza Strip.

The two ministers decided to meet as soon as possible.
