Iran - Clotilde Reiss
Paris, August 8, 2009.
Following Clotilde Reiss’s appearance before a court in Tehran, France reiterates its demand for the immediate release of the young academic, as the accusations against her are entirely baseless.
During this same collective trial, we also learned of the arrest and hearing of Ms. Nazak Afshar, an employee of our embassy in Tehran. We also demand her immediate release, as the charges against her are without any basis.
France also protests the conditions of this court appearance. The embassy was neither informed in advance nor authorized to attend this court appearance in line with international rules on consular protection. We also deplore the fact that Clotilde Reiss and Ms. Afshar were unable to be assisted by an attorney.
We are in close contact with our European partners, and notably the Swedish Presidency, to examine the attitude we wish to adopt.
