Iran - Conditional release of Clotilde Reiss

Statement by Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, August 16, 2009

I am delighted and relieved following our compatriot Clotilde Reiss’s conditional release.

I have telephoned Clotilde Reiss’s father to express to him my admiration for the courage and dignity Clotilde has shown throughout this period of imprisonment.

The French authorities have been constantly mobilized since 1 July to secure this release.

Clotilde Reiss nevertheless remains under judicial supervision. I reiterate that France asks for all legal proceedings against her to be dropped, so that Clotilde can get back to her family as swiftly as possible.

Until her innocence is recognized, Clotilde Reiss will be accommodated at the French Embassy in Tehran, which is providing her with all the necessary support, to allow her to prepare her defence and get her innocence recognized, the charges weighing against her – I repeat – being baseless.

This outcome was achieved thanks in particular to the constant support of the Swedish European Union presidency, our European partners and other friendly countries who interceded with the Iranian authorities. I want to thank everyone./.
