Kabul - Suicide Attack

Statement issued by Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs.

Paris, August 18, 2009

I utterly condemn today’s suicide attack on the road leading into Kabul that killed several people including seven Afghan civilians, two Afghan employees of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and a soldier from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), and wounded some 50 people.

I want to express my condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of this attack.

This criminal act, coming on top of other acts of violence committed in the past few days, testifies to the Taliban’s resolve, two days before the presidential and provincial elections, to disrupt the balloting. The Taliban’s sole aim is to terrorize the population to prevent them from going to the polls on election day.

In this difficult situation, I salute the courage and determination shown by the Afghan people through their very strong participation in the election campaign.

France assures the Afghan people and government of its total solidarity and its determination to remain engaged by their side so that they may freely determine their future./.
