Paris, October 13, 2009

France welcomes the Security Council’s adoption of UNSCR 1890 renewing the mandate of the International Security Assistance Force for one year. The resolution was adopted unanimously by the Security Council members and attests the international community’s support for the commitment of ISAF and NATO alongside the Afghan people. It underlines the legitimacy of their efforts to achieve security and stability in Afghanistan.

This resolution is in line with the resolutions adopted since UNSCR 1386 of 20 December 2001, which created the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), under chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.

France particularly welcomes the support given in this resolution to the deployment of the European Gendarmerie Force (EGF) as a European contribution to the NATO police mission in Afghanistan.

With the EGF, we are strengthening the Europeans’ commitment in Afghanistan in the key sector of operational training of a national Afghan police force capable of taking over military action on the ground.
