Announcement by the United States and Russia of the upcoming signature of a bilateral agreement on reducing their strategic offensive weapons

Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, March 26 2010

President Sarkozy warmly welcomes the announcement by the United States and Russia of the upcoming signature of a bilateral agreement, following on the START treaty, to reduce their stockpiles of strategic offensive weapons.

This success sends a very important signal to the international community ahead of the Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in May.

France supports the continuation of the bilateral Russian-American process of reducing their nuclear arsenals, the largest in the world.

France also offers her full support for other major disarmament projects, such as universal adherence to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and conclusion of a treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons.

President Sarkozy will discuss these issues with President Obama during his upcoming visit to Washington./.
