Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, 8 April 2010

President Sarkozy was very shocked to learn of the death of a legionnaire of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (Calvi). He was taking part with his unit in a mission to support Afghan troops in the south of the Tagab Valley. Attacked by insurgents, he was shot and seriously wounded. Evacuated by helicopter, he died on arrival at the Kabul French military hospital.

This soldier paid with his life for France’s commitment to help bring peace and security to the Afghan people.

President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain. His thoughts also go to his comrades-in-arms.

The Head of State reaffirms his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He forcefully condemns the mindless violence and expresses France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
