France/Poland/Lech Kaczynski/plane crash
Paris, April 10, 2010
President Sarkozy was extremely shocked and profoundly saddened to learn of the death of the Polish President, Lech Kaczynski, his wife and the other passengers of the plane which crashed today near Smolensk, Russia.
At such a painful time, he conveys his deepest sympathy to President Kaczynski’s family and all the families of the victims of this accident, and wants to express, personally and on behalf of the French people, his most heartfelt condolences.
In this tragic ordeal which has plunged the whole of Poland into mourning, he wants to reiterate the exceptional feelings of friendship uniting France and Poland and the French and Polish peoples.
He wants to pay tribute to the memory of President Kaczynski. Driven by ardent patriotism, Lech Kaczynski devoted his life to his country. A tireless defender of the ideas in which he believed, he always fought with conviction for the values which founded his entry into politics: democracy, freedom and the struggle against totalitarianism. His election as President in 2005 was the crowning achievement of a whole career dedicated to Poland’s cause. With his death France loses a friend deeply committed to the development of relations between our two countries, as President Sarkozy was able to see for himself during the many times they met./.
