Statement by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Spokesman

Paris, April 12, 2010

France condemns the clashes which took place in Bangkok on Saturday between demonstrators and police. The violence resulted in the death of more than 20 people and injured nearly 900.

France extends her condolences to the bereaved, particularly the family of the Japanese journalist killed while carrying out his job gathering information.

We urge both parties to demonstrate responsibility, which is the only way to allow a return to calm and political dialogue in order to find a solution to the crisis.

We advise French nationals in the Thai capital to exercise the utmost caution and invite them to regularly check the “Travel Advice” section of the website which is being continuously updated. Our embassy in Bangkok, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs’ crisis center, remains fully mobilized.
