Funeral of President Lech Kaczynski

Published on April 19, 2010
Letter from Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, to Bronislaw Komorowski, Interim President of Poland

Paris, April 18, 2010

President Komorowski,

As you know, I had planned to attend the funeral of President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria Kaczynska in Krakow this Sunday.

Unfortunately, because of the current exceptional meteorological conditions paralysing air traffic across Europe, I regret to inform you that I shall be unable to come to Poland this Sunday. Believe me, I am deeply sorry about this given how extremely important it is for me and all the French to pay tribute to the memory of the President of Poland and all those tragically killed last week near Smolensk.

I wanted to inform you that I have personally asked France’s ambassador in Poland, François Barry Delongchamps, to represent France at the funeral.
Over and above his presence on Sunday, the whole French people will be present in spirit alongside the Polish people. I have therefore asked for flags to be flown at half mast on all public buildings as a sign of solidarity.
