Paris, April 26, 2010
President Sarkozy had a working lunch today at the Elysée with European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. They reviewed the main European and international issues.
Nicolas Sarkozy and José Manuel Barroso noted, inter alia, their agreement on both the need for swift resolute action against the speculation targeting Greece to ensure the stability of the Euro Area and the importance of an ambitious European economic strategy based on a genuine European economic government.
President Sarkozy stressed that Europe had to defend its interests in the world more resolutely in both trade discussions and the negotiations under way in the wake of the Copenhagen conference, including working seriously on the option of a border adjustment mechanism. Finally, the Head of State emphasized his personal commitment to maintaining a strong vibrant European agriculture supported by a revamped Common Agricultural Policy./.
