Message of congratulations from Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, to David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, May 11, 2010

President Sarkozy sincerely congratulates David Cameron on his appointment to the post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He most warmly wishes him every success in the conduct of his high office and looks forward to working with him on strengthening the very close cooperation and exceptional ties woven between France and the United Kingdom.

As he had the opportunity of stressing at the time of his March 2008 State Visit, President Sarkozy is convinced of the strength, vitality and essential nature of the entente between the United Kingdom and France. In a radically changing world, he emphasizes that it is together that the two countries will make their voice heard and act effectively, be it in order to shoulder their responsibility in ensuring global security, overcome the financial crisis or fight climate change.

President Sarkozy is keen for the United Kingdom and France, partners in the European project where their common futures are at stake, to continue making their contribution to building Europe, in the spirit of trust and friendship which inspires them./.
