Situation in Thailand

Statement by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Spokesman

Paris, May 19, 2010

France is profoundly shocked by this morning’s violence in Bangkok, which follows several days of bloody clashes and now seems to be spreading to certain provinces. We condemn all acts of violence, especially the firing of real bullets in areas where civilians live, and once again urge the parties to make every effort to achieve a political solution to this crisis.

We extend our condolences to the families and loved-ones of the many casualties, who include an Italian journalist killed while performing his mission to gather information.

As regards our compatriots in Bangkok, we advise them to exercise the utmost caution. Our embassy’s crisis unit is keeping French residents and travellers continuously informed.

We ask them to avoid all travel to Bangkok, as well as the provinces in the north and north-east of the country and advise them regularly to consult the “Travel Advice” section of the diplomatie.gouv.fr website, which is being continuously updated.
