Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, May 22, 2010

President Sarkozy was extremely sad to learn of the death of a captain from the Charleville-Mézières 3rd Engineers Regiment. Working as part of a mine-clearance team alongside Dutch and Afghan soldiers, he was mortally wounded when an improvised explosive device [IED] was set off. A Dutch soldier and Afghan interpreter were also killed and four other Dutch soldiers wounded in the attack.

This soldier paid with his life for France’s commitment to help bring peace and security to the Afghan people.

President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain. His thoughts also go to his comrades-in-arms.

The Head of State reaffirms his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He forcefully condemned the mindless violence and expressed France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
