Afghanistan – Death of a French soldier – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, June 8, 2010

President Sarkozy was extremely sad to learn of the death of an NCO from the Calvi 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment. During a reconnaissance operation launched south of Tagab today, a sergeant was fatally wounded in an anti-tank rocket attack from Afghan insurgents while taking part in a cover mission. Three of his fellow soldiers were wounded during the same operation.

This NCO paid with his life for France’s commitment to help bring peace and security to the Afghan people.

President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain. His thoughts also go to his comrades-in-arms.

The Head of State reaffirmed his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He forcefully condemned the mindless violence and expressed France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
