Desecration of graves in the Loos-en-Gohelle military cemetery – Letter from Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Paris, June 11, 2010

I was outraged and appalled to learn of the desecration of graves in the Loos-en-Gohelle military cemetery, where British and Canadian soldiers are buried.

I utterly condemn this vile act and ask you to be kind enough to convey my sympathy and solidarity and those of the French people to the families involved and the whole British people.

Its perpetration at the time when I am preparing to come and celebrate in London with the British authorities on 18 June the memory of those who, in the United Kingdom and in France, fought for freedom, makes this act violating the respect due to the combatants all the more abhorrent.

I have asked to be kept informed of the progress of the investigation and call for the guilty to be sentenced with all the severity befitting the gravity of the act which they have committed.

(complimentary close)./.
