Desecration of graves in Loos-en-Gohelle military cemetery – Letter from Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, to William Hague, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Paris, June 11, 2010

Secretary of State,

I was utterly appalled to learn today of the desecration of graves where British and Canadian soldiers lie buried in the Loos-en-Gohelle military cemetery. In the face of this vile act, I want formally to express my firm condemnation and strong disapproval. I also want to convey my feelings of solidarity, on behalf of all the French, to the families involved and the whole British people.

France will make every effort to ensure that the perpetrators of this act are tried and receive sentences commensurate with these offences.

(complimentary close)./.
