Afghanistan – Death of a French soldier – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, June 19, 2010

On the evening of Friday, 18 June, President Sarkozy was very sad to learn of the death of a lance corporal from the Tarbes 1st Parachute Hussar Regiment.

The armoured squadron’s combat post came under artillery fire wounding a French soldier and Afghan interpreter. They were evacuated to Kabul hospital where the lance corporal died from his wounds.

This soldier paid with his life for France’s commitment to help bring peace and security to the Afghan people.

President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain. He wishes the wounded man a speedy recovery. His thoughts also go to the soldier’s comrades-in-arms.

The Head of State reaffirmed his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He forcefully condemned the mindless violence and expressed France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
