Paris, June 28, 010

The Minister for Higher Education and Research extends her most sincere congratulations to the teams from Arianespace, the Centre national d’études spatiales [CNES – French Space Agency] and European Space Agency (ESA), and the European manufacturers involved who contributed to the success of this Ariane 5 launch, the second in 2010.

Launched successfully for the 37th consecutive time, Ariane 5 has put two satellites into orbit, confirming its position as the only launcher available on the commercial market capable of simultaneously launching two payloads.

The first satellite, Arabsat 5A, is a telecommunications satellite built jointly by the French manufacturers Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, and will deliver TV services to the Middle East and North Africa. It is the 7th satellite Ariane has launched for Arabsat. The second, the multi-mission COMS satellite launched for a South Korean research institute, was built partly by Astrium. It is designed for meteorological observation, ocean surveillance and experimental broadband communications.

This launch evidences the worldwide recognition of Arianespace’s technical and industrial expertise./.
