Afghanistan – Death of a French soldier
Paris, July 6, 2010
President Sarkozy was extremely sad to learn of the death in Afghanistan of a staff sergeant from the Valdahon 13th Engineers Regiment.
This NCO belonged to the Task Force Lafayette’s route clearance detachment. During a reconnaissance operation on the Vermont logistics route, north of the village of Sherkel (south of Tagab), an IED exploded, seriously wounding the staff sergeant. He was taken to Kabul hospital, where he died from his injuries.
This NCO paid with his life for France’s commitment to help bring peace and security to the Afghan people.
President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain. His thoughts also go to his comrades-in-arms.
The Head of State reaffirms his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He forcefully condemns the mindless violence and expresses France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
