Telephone conversations between Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, and Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, and Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, July 27, 2010

President Sarkozy spoke on the telephone yesterday evening to Mr Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, and this evening to Mr Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel.

He stressed to his two interlocutors the urgency of reactivating the peace process and need for the parties to act in accordance with this objective.

In this context, President Sarkozy called for a rapid resumption of direct negotiations, the extension of the moratorium on settlement building and halting of the measures affecting the balance in Jerusalem. To be constructive, these negotiations should cover all the final-status-related issues, including those pertaining to land, on the basis of the 1967 borders, security and Jerusalem.

President Sarkozy assured Messrs Netanyahu and Abbas of France’s support for and commitment to the implementation of the solution of the two States, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security./.
