Afghanistan/Murder of ten civilians in the province of Badakhstan – Statement by Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, August 7, 2010

I was utterly shocked to learn the news that ten civilians, including eight American, German and British medical personnel who had come to provide ophthalmological care to destitute people, have reportedly been killed in the Afghan province of Badakhshan.

I condemn in the strongest terms this particularly cowardly, cruel act which shows extreme disregard for human life.

My thoughts go to the familes and close friends of these people who have sacrificed their lives in their humanitarian mission to relieve the suffering of the Afghan people. I want to pay tribute to their memory and their action.

In these painful circumstances, France reaffirms, with her partners, her determination to remain committed alongside the Afghan people to working for the country’s long-term stabilization.

The perpetrators of these crimes must be identified, arrested and brought before the courts./.
