China/Floods – Statement by Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, August 9, 2010

I am deeply saddened by the disaster which is raging in China’s Gansu region and affecting more than 50,000 people. Torrential rain and landslides have reportedly led to the deaths of over 120 people, while 1,300 are reported missing.

France extends her sincere condolences to the victims’ families and close friends, and expresses her sympathy to the Chinese people and authorities.

In a spirit of solidarity, and within a European framework, she is ready to study any aid request formulated by the Chinese authorities./.
