President Sarkozy expresses his great shock and sadness in the face of the natural disasters currently affecting China, India and Pakistan. He pays tribute to the efforts of the civilian and military rescue workers from these countries who are helping, in particularly tough conditions, the victims of the floods and landslides.
These disasters are affecting millions of people.
The number of victims and people missing is already into the thousands. President Sarkozy wants to express France’s solidarity with the victims and their families.
In particular, the Indian authorities have announced the deaths of three French in India, in the mountainous region of Ladakh. The President extends his wholehearted support to their families in these painful, tragic circumstances and thanks the Indian authorities for their help.
France is ready to look, with her partners, at all the requests for humanitarian and logistical aid to assist the populations affected.
As regards Pakistan, who has requested international aid, France has already provided a €1 million bilateral aid package. She is asking the European Commission, given the gravity of the situation, to make extra EU funds available in order to give concrete expression to Europe’s commitment to the Pakistani people./.
