Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, August 23, 2010

President Sarkozy was very shocked to learn of the deaths this morning of a French officer and soldier from the Fréjus 21st Marine Infantry Regiment during an operation south of Tagab (Afghanistan). Shot and seriously wounded, they did not survive their injuries.

Three more of their comrades were wounded at the start of the operation, during the night.

These soldiers paid with their lives for France’s commitment to help bring peace and security to the Afghan people.

President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain.

His thoughts also go to their wounded comrades-in-arms, whom he wishes a speedy recovery.

The Head of State reaffirms his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He utterly condemns the insurgents’ murderous attacks on our soldiers and expresses France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
