The determination you showed is that of France, who will remain in Afghanistan as long as necessary. We can’t leave the field clear to the fanatics, barbarians and terrorists who threaten our societies, who scorn mankind’s universal values and bring death and destruction. Our security here in France also depends on our commitment over there. Barbarity can’t win against democracy.
I know how tough this mission is, I appreciate its risks and accept my responsibilities, but France can’t shirk her security imperatives, France can’t shirk her responsibilities in the fight against global terrorism. By being true to our values, our commitment and the memory of the 45 French soldiers who, like you, were killed in action, we must continue our efforts with our allies to help the Afghan people.
