Telephone conversation between Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, and Barack Obama, President of the United States of America – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, September 2 , 2010

The President of the United States of America called President Sarkozy this afternoon to inform him of the progress of the discussions under way since yesterday in Washington in the framework of the resumption of the direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

President Sarkozy, who had strongly encouraged the two parties to embark on direct discussions, assured President Obama of France’s full support and her intention, to take, in the next few months, strong initiatives to support them and arrive at a fair, balanced and sustainable peace settlement. A first opportunity will present itself at the summit of the Union for the Mediterranean which President Sarkozy and President Mubarak will co-chair at the end of November in Barcelona.

In this context, President Sarkozy stressed the absolute necessity, for both parties, to refrain from any measure which might risk undermining or even jeopardizing the pursuit of the direct negotiations./.
