Afghanistan/murder of Syed Hamid Noori
Paris, September 6, 2010
I was horrified to learn of the murder of Syed Hamid Noori, an Afghan public radio and television news anchorman. I utterly condemn this appalling crime.
During the tragedies his country has gone through, Syed Hamid Noori embodied the spirit of freedom, which is at the heart of the journalist’s profession, and won unanimous respect through his courage and skills which had earned him the post of vice-president of Afghanistan’s national journalists’ association.
I salute the man and his action and pay my respects to his memory. Everything must be done to ensure the perpetrators of this barbaric crime are identified and punished.
France, unfailingly committed to freedom of the press and freedom to exercise the profession of journalism, is deeply distressed by his tragic death and has not forgotten the other journalists in Afghanistan who have sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom of information.
In these painful circumstances, I extend to Syed Hamid Noori’s family and close friends, as well as the members of the editorial office of the Afghan national radio and television news service, my sincere condolences and assure them of my wholehearted compassion and solidarity./.
