Paris, September 27, 2010

President Sarkozy spoke on the telephone this evening to Benjamin Netanyahu.

Following on from his discussions at the lunch given during the President of the Palestinian Authority’s visit to Paris, President Sarkozy talked to the Israeli Prime Minister about the conditions which would enable the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations relaunched on 2 September in Washington to continue to have every chance of success.

With this in mind, the Head of State stressed the importance of a mechanism to support the direct negotiations between the parties. He also reiterated his proposal to hold in Paris a preparatory meeting for the Union for the Mediterranean summit chaired by its two co-presidents, Hosni Mubarak and Nicolas Sarkozy, attended inter alia by the Israeli Prime Minister and President of the Palestinian Authority.

President Sarkozy expressed his desire to remain in close contact with Mr Netanyahu and all the relevant players in order to pursue the consultations on these proposals./.
