Paris, October 25, 2010
Now that Catherine Ashton has just appointed Pierre Vimont executive secretary general of the European External Action Service, I would like to express France’s pride at seeing one of its own contributing to the establishment of a strong, ambitious European diplomatic corps.
I extend to him my warmest, most heartfelt congratulations and my best wishes for the utmost success in the accomplishment of his mission. With the entry in force of the Lisbon Treaty, the pursuit of an expanded, strengthened common foreign and security policy—and beyond that, of the EU’s external relations as a whole—will play a major role.
The European Union must do a better job of highlighting its weight and its interests in the world. Catherine Ashton must have the tools to fully carry out her tasks and thereby to fully live up to the expectations of her office. This is of vital importance to Europe’s future position and to the success of our common values and interests on the international policy stage.
As executive secretary general of the European External Action Service, Pierre Vimont has all the necessary qualities and experience to contribute to increasing the effectiveness, cohesiveness, continuity and visibility of the common foreign policy under the authority of Catherine Ashton.
