European Commission fine on the Air France-KLM Group
The Minister of State responsible for European Affairs deplores the decision taken by the European Commission to fine the Air France-KLM Group €340 million in the so-called air cargo cartel case.
Pierre Lelouche is surprised by the wholly disproportionate nature of this fine in the light of the potential losses suffered by the group’s freight customers. This fine, equivalent to the price of two Airbus A380s, is likely to inflict substantial damage on the French air sector and comes on top of the losses the sector sustained in 2009 as a result of the economic crisis.
The decision taken by the Commission is, moreover, discriminatory since it exempts from prosecution those airlines, which, while originally participating in the cartel, reported their competitors./.
