Statement by Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, November 10, 2010

It is with very great joy and profound relief that I can announce, according to reports by the Nigerian authorities, the release of three French hostages abducted in Nigeria on 22 September from a ship belonging to the company Bourbon.

My first thoughts go to our fellow citizens who have just gone through a difficult ordeal. I fully share the happiness and relief of their families and close friends.

Throughout this abduction, all the services of the State and, at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Crisis Centre, have been fully mobilized, liaising constantly with Bourbon.

I express my gratitude to the Nigerian authorities, whose constant dedicated efforts led to the release of the three hostages.

Bourbon is taking the necessary measures to ensure the return of the freed sailors to France, liaising with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

We remain fully mobilized to obtain the release of our fellow citizens still being held hostage, and are working tirelessly to this end./.
