Telephone conversation between Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, and Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria – Statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, January 12, 2011

President Sarkozy had a telephone conversation this evening, Wednesday, with Mr Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria, on the situation in Lebanon following the developments in the Lebanese government.

The Head of State reaffirmed his support for the Lebanese authorities and institutions. He expressed the hope that international dialogue would help the Lebanese overcome this delicate phase in full respect for the Lebanese democratic institutions, Lebanon’s independence and her international commitments. President Sarkozy welcomed the permanent dialogue that France and Syria have been holding on this matter at the highest level, illustrated once again during President Bashar al-Assad’s visit to France on 9 December last year.

President Sarkozy also sent a message to M. Michel Suleiman, President of Lebanon, to assure him of his support in the exercise of his constitutional responsibilities and to reiterate through him to the Lebanese people the strength of the ties of friendship existing between our two countries.

Tomorrow, Thursday, 13 January 2011, at 7.15 p.m. at the Elysée Palace, the Head of State will receive Mr Saad Hariri, Prime Minister of Lebanon, with whom he will discuss the developments in the situation in Lebanon since their meeting in New York on Monday./.
