Situation in Tunisia
Paris, January 15, 2011
France’s policy is based on two steadfast principles:
non-interference in the domestic affairs of a sovereign State;
support for democracy and freedom.
For several weeks, the Tunisian people have been expressing their desire for democracy. France, united by so many ties of friendship to Tunisia, firmly supports them.
France calls for calm and for an end to the violence. She asks for free elections to be organized as soon as possible.
At this crucial time for Tunisia, France is willing to respond to any request for support, so that the democratic process may take place in the most indisputable way.
Finally, France has taken the necessary steps to ensure that any suspicious financial transactions concerning Tunisian assets in France are frozen, in accordance with legislation. She is ready to respond without delay to any request by the constitutional authorities regarding Tunisian assets in France./.
