Tunisia/death of French photographer Lucas Mebrouk Dolega – Statement by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Spokesman

Paris, January 17, 2011

France expresses her shock following the death in Tunis today of Lucas Mebrouk Dolega, a French photographer from the EPA agency who was the victim of a deliberate act of homicide, having been seriously injured during a demonstration on Friday.

France hopes full light will be shed on the circumstances of his death and expresses to Lucas Mebrouk Dolega’s family and close friends, as well as the editorial staff of the EPA agency, her condolences, sympathy and solidarity in this ordeal. We appreciate how painful this loss is for his family and many friends. We share their grief and sadness.

As the French authorities have recalled during the recent events in Tunisia, nothing can justify the use of such disproportionate violence against demonstrators and journalists. We reiterate our condemnation of all forms of violence and the use of force, which have resulted in too many casualties in Tunisia in recent weeks. In this regard, we do not forget the Franco-Tunisian teacher Hatem Bettahar and hope, likewise, that the circumstances of his death will be established./.
