Definitive results of the referendum on self-determination in Southern Sudan – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, February 7, 2011

President Sarkozy welcomes the announcement of the definitive results of Southern Sudan’s referendum on self-determination. He congratulates the people of Southern Sudan on their huge turnout for this historic ballot, during which they clearly and freely expressed their desire for independence.

The Head of State also congratulates the parties to the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement on the responsibility they showed in holding the referendum by the planned deadline and accepting its result.

President Sarkozy invites the Sudanese parties to approach the post-referendum period in the spirit of dialogue and openness that enabled the ballot to go ahead smoothly. In particular, he encourages them to deal swiftly with the issues of the 2005 Agreement that remain unresolved.

France will stand alongside all Sudanese people to help them get through the interim period in the best possible conditions, in both the north and the south, and establish a lasting peace throughout the region./.
