Development of the situation in Tunisia/meeting between Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, and Mohamed Ghannouchi, Prime Minister of Tunisia – Communiqué issued by the French Presidency

Paris, February 17, 2011

President Sarkozy had a telephone conversation today with Tunisian Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi. The meeting focused on the development of the situation in Tunisia in this period of historic change. President Sarkozy emphasized that France would be in the vanguard in helping the Tunisian people make their aspirations to build a democratic, prosperous Tunisia a reality.

Mme Christine Lagarde, Minister for the Economy, Finance and Industry, accompanied by Laurent Wauquiez, Minister responsible for European Affairs, will be going to Tunis next week to listen to the Tunisian authorities and look at the practical details of providing French support.

Other ministerial visits will follow and France will actively participate in the international conference in Carthage, which Prime Minister Ghannouchi has confirmed will be convened in the spring./.
